Masterpieces of the Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum holds some of the most famous works of Dutch art. Here we highlight a few that every visitor should know.
The Night Watch
Rembrandt's monumental group portrait of a civic guard company is the museum's centrepiece. It was completed in 1642 and has been the subject of restoration and study. The Gallery of Honour is built around it.
Vermeer
The museum holds several works by Johannes Vermeer, including The Milkmaid and The Little Street. Vermeer's use of light and quiet domestic scenes define Dutch Golden Age painting for many.
Other Golden Age masters
Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and other 17th-century masters are well represented. The collection also includes decorative arts, Delftware, and historical objects that tell the story of the Netherlands. Allow time to explore beyond the most famous paintings.
